Getting Certified to Help
Mental Health First Aid is an evidenced based, in-person education training that teaches you how to assist people with a mental health problem or crisis. It is an 8 hour program that provides the skills needed to effectively communicate and help those dealing with a mental illness get the professional help they need. At the end of the training course, participants receive a Mental Health First Aid Certificate.
There are two different Mental Health First Aid Trainings available. Adult Mental Health First Aid trains adults who are interested in helping other adults with mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a training course for adults or older/mature teens who are interested in supporting youth dealing with mental illness.
Mental Health First Aid teaches you:
- Signs of addictions and mental illnesses
- 5-step action plan to assess a situation and help
- Impact of mental health and substance use disorders
- Local resources and where to turn for help
The goal of these trainings is to prepare people to respond to mental illness with the same confidence that they would when utilizing CPR in a cardiac emergency.
