Family Support Group

Family Support Groups are for relatives and others who care for and are supporting individuals experiencing a mental health condition. Groups are led by trained family members of individuals affected by mental health conditions.

Family Support Groups are an important free resource for families who have a loved one with a mental illness or are facing a mental health challenge or crisis . Knowing that others have had the same experiences is a relief to families who may feel isolated or alone. Families gain hope when they meet others that have been dealing with similar issues and are learning new skills and information to support their loved one.

What to Expect

Every NAMI Family Support Group starts by sharing the meeting agenda, NAMI Group Guidelines and Principles of Support.  These explain how the group will be run and how group members can support each other.  Attendees are then invited to share a brief description or check-in of what is going on with their loved one.  After everyone has checked-in, the group addresses issues that have been brought up by participants.  The meeting concludes with a self-care check after 90 minutes.

What Will You Gain?

Through NAMI Family Support Groups, you will find:

    • A network of friends who care and understand
    • Ideas that help you take care of yourself and your family
    • A chance to share your experience and learn from others who have been there
    • Information about brain disorders, treatment and services

What Are People Saying?

The most beneficial thing for me was that I am not alone. I found the NAMI Family Support Group at the time I really needed it!
